The City of Larkspur is home to three bridges connecting Magnolia Avenue to streets to the east: the Bon Air Bridge, the Doherty Drive Bridge, and the Alexander Avenue Bridge. Over time, each has been damaged by wear or by tidal action, and has been repaired or retrofitted to varying degrees. Additionally, over the last 50 years, safety standards for the design of bridges and access to them have changed. All of these factors have contributed to Caltrans declaring the bridges "Structurally Deficient."

The City of Larkspur intends to repair, retrofit, and/or replace these three local bridges, under the Federal Highway Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement (HBRR) program.

Doherty Drive Bridge

Each bridge will be planned, designed, and constructed separately. Bridge-specific issues for the three structures vary, as the structures are different in their local significance, utility, environmental settings, and repair/retrofit/replacement considerations. The Alexander Avenue Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places and requires special processes and design considerations. For this reason, work on the Bon Air and Doherty Bridges, including design, engineering and construction, will occur before that

Currently the planned schedule for the project is for technical, environmental, and design studies to take place in 2008; detailed structural design activities to occur in 2009; and actual construction to start after mid-2010.
